Girl Friday - Jack of all Trades?

January 31, 2019

When I decided to start my own business, I thought long and hard about what my business name should be. I wanted something catchy, that reflected the services I was offering, the area I covered and that would be easy for people to understand. Girl Friday Harrow seemed to tick all the boxes.

The Urban Dictionary gives the following description for Girl Friday:

A 'go to' girl; a female who will help you get things taken care of; a female you can rely on when you are in need of extra assistance; a female who acts as a 'jack of all trades' and is capable of doing almost anything; a girl you can count on when you are overwhelmed with your own chores and the duties must be done; a girl who does most of the leg work on a project, but never takes (or gets) credit.

I hadn't truly anticipated for a moment just how literally some of my clients would take my business name as I'm sure that some of them believe that I am capable of doing absolutely anything. It's very flattering that people think that I can turn my hand to all sorts but it's certainly tested me on a number of occasions.

My specialities include:

  • Administration

  • Event Management

  • Proofreading

  • Research

  • Gift Concierge

  • De-cluttering

But I have been asked to complete tasks that I had never undertaken before, many of which aren't really the sort of thing that a PA or VA would be asked to do but I'm usually happy to give things a try - if it's something that I have absolutely no clue about, then I'm happy to hold my hands up and throw in the towel. And I'm also very happy to find someone that is better qualified to assist.

With client quotes like "there's nothing she can't turn her hand to", it's a great boost to your ego and always lovely to hear but the truth of the matter is...

1) I don't do numbers

2) I don't do numbers

3) I don't do numbers
